Hi, I’m Hilarie.

Read the headers to get the ‘story’, or the copy to learn more.

The Fashion Industry: Studied Clothing Design and Technology, and spent ten years travelling to new places, visiting major fashion events and working with the largest retailers of the day and some of the biggest names in fashion. It was hard work and great fun!

Doing something different - Training and Consultancy: In 1994 set up a small Training and Consultancy business offering a wide range of courses, seminars, workshops, and life coaching, offering the skills that can change lives.

Decided to study Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy: On Effective Presentation courses several people had demonstrated a severe stress response  at the thought of presenting - often approaching a panic attack. I needed to understand what was happening, so decided to study psychology via the Open University, with a view to doing a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Dealing with Panic Attacks:  Disappointed with the academic side of psychology,  looked further afield and discovered a remarkable new therapy called the Human Givens approach to Counselling and Psychotherapy. Traditional psychology as practised had become a process of box ticking, characterised by a lack of inventiveness and creativity in dealing with client needs.  The Human Givens approach was brand new and just beginning to offer training in Counselling and Psychotherapy. The synchronicity was perfect.

“Perhaps the greatest discovery of my generation is that man can change his life by changing his attitude of mind.” William James

Human Givens Counselling and Psychotherapy: We were taught how to be therapists and how to utilise powerful therapeutic technique - something many academic psychologists and psychiatrists are not taught. H.G. encourages a more creative and inventive approach to counselling/psychotherapy - many mirrored upon the work of Dr Milton Erikson, often called the founding father of psychotherapy/hypnotherapy.

Psychotherapy and Counselling is a specialisation in itself. 2001 received a Post Graduate Diploma and Practitioners certificate in Counselling Psychotherapy, through the Human Givens Institute.

Over Fourteen years of experience: I am a member of the European Therapy Studies Institute and the Human Givens Institute, and have been a practising Human Givens Counselling Psychotherapist since qualifying in 2001.

Worked with Maidenhead PCT & the NHS from 2005 - 2013: Working with every aspect of mental and emotional health. It was an extraordinary  opportunity for learning.  The diversity of people, problems and conditions encountered is often unseen in private practise, demanding more creativity and versatility than ever before.

Undaunted by even the most severe of conditions: With experience we take it all in our stride. Using a variety of creative and innovative techniques the results are often remarkable, as are the clients. It’s a team effort, so the success is shared - we do it together.

SIX sessions: In the NHS we didn’t always have the luxury of offering unlimited sessions to our clients, so ‘Brief Therapy’ was a must. Each client was offered just six one hour sessions. Curiously the PCT has now introduced CBT based counselling which is not a brief therapy and requires some 20 hours per client.  Over the years spent in the NHS approximately 96% of clients who completed their therapy made remarkable progress in just SIX one hour sessions, and on occasion in less than six. These statistics were collated from our ongoing assessment procedures.

Wide diversity of background: The wide diversity of background experience was perfect training for psychotherapy. As a Trainer I can now offer workshops and seminars, and make the effortless transition from clinical counselling to life coaching and interpersonal skills training. Likewise my experience in the workplace makes it easier for me to work with corporate mental and emotional health, relieving stress utilising a variety of techniques, and returning clients to their workplace quickly and easily - often with an increased skills base that enables the ongoing management of their own psychological wellbeing.

“A teacher can never truly teach unless he is still learning himself.” - Rabindranath Tagore

Ongoing commitment to change: enables us to share what we have learned.   We must work on ourselves if we wish to un-complicate our lives and gain the skills needed to handle the natural ups and downs of life. Thus through personal change and experience we can teach others what works.

Working part time in the NHS as Practice Counsellor for six GP Surgeries: ranging from Langley & Slough, to Maidenhead, Ascot & Sandhurst, I have gained a wide spectrum of experience. But no matter what our background, we all suffer the same problems - even if we choose to handle them differently. I now have a Private Practice, and continue to run workshops.

Author of ‘Book’: For fun I write fantasy fiction, “The Wand of Alithea”. See Amazon for rating.

“Being quietly OK with not being OK - that’s the secret.” - Hilarie Janes

Goal and Mission/Vision Statement: To assist my clients to regain / reclaim their state of wellbeing, and their sense of purpose and autonomy in life - to whatever degree each is able. To assist them in achieving their goals for therapy. To fulfil this commitment without judgement, with integrity and compassion, with assertiveness, firmness when needed, and kindness - to whatever degree I am able at that time. To continue to grow and learn, and to share this knowledge unconditionally with those who are also ready to listen and learn. To accept and honour my clients just as they are in this moment. To accept and acknowledge myself as I am in this moment, and to treat my clients as I would wish to be treated under similar circumstances.
